What's a Balsam Bash?

A Balsam Bash is an organized event aimed at removing invasive Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) from natural environments. This non-native plant, originally introduced to the UK and other regions as an ornamental species, spreads aggressively along riverbanks, wetlands, and woodlands, outcompeting native flora and disrupting ecosystems.

During a Balsam Bash, volunteers manually pull up the shallow-rooted plants before they can produce and disperse seeds. This hands-on conservation effort helps restore biodiversity and prevent further spread. Often coordinated by environmental groups, local councils, or wildlife trusts, these events provide an opportunity for communities to engage in habitat restoration while enjoying the outdoors.

By participating in a Balsam Bash, individuals contribute to the protection of native species and the overall health of their local environment.
