GGRA is proud to contribute to a plaque erected in Friezland Arena remembering the work of David McNeeney. He was a tireless campaigner and community leader whose work has left a lasting legacy in Saddleworth and beyond.

As twice-elected Chairman of the Oldham and District Riding Club, David played a key role in creating the Friezland Riding Arena, securing land, grants, and community support to make it a reality in 1984. He also helped launch the Highways Etiquette Competition, promoting road safety for riders across the North-West for eight years.

In 1991 he helped form the Friezland User Group to maintain the arena and, alongside his wife Kathleen, established the much-loved Horseman’s Christmas Carol Service, which ran until 2023.

Beyond the equestrian world, David was deeply committed to his community. As Chairman of the Greenfield and Grasscroft Residents’ Association (GGRA) for over 10 years, he revitalised the group, expanded membership to nearly 400 households, and strengthened links with local councillors, the MP, and planning authorities. He was also instrumental in launching Saddleworth’s Hydro Project, promoting local renewable energy.

David’s passion, leadership, and dedication to creating free, safe, and sustainable community spaces will be long remembered.
