Moorgate Halt Level Crossing

Moorgate level crossing is above Uppermill on a path connecting the village with Ladcastle Road. This direct and beautiful route dates back to Saxon times. Network Rail is proposing to close this path as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade  (TRU).

TRU in itself is very much to be welcomed. It will improve railway services in many ways. However, Network Rail's proposal to close the footpath is not only unnecessary, but dangerous and disruptive.

In 2022 Network Rail proposed to retain the path and do this by constructing a footbridge to replace the level crossing for safety reasons. This was felt to be an acceptable solution by all involved. It then withdrew the footbridge plan, on grounds of cost, and sought to close the path completely. It suggested that walkers should use another footpath which connects Ladcastle Road and Oldham Road. Many think this path is dangerous, particularly for children and vulnerable adults. It is also felt to be inconvenient and difficult to use. The Moorgate Footbridge Campaign believes that a footbridge should be built because it is the safest, most convenient and most locally appropriate solution.

There will be a six-week period for making representations when Network Rail submits a formal application in the Autumn. Residents can register their interest by emailing moorgatefootbridge@gmail.com . They will then be sent information about the proposals, and how to make comments on them.
